Ruby joined me in 2017. She is a six-year-old Ackie Monitor, a medium-sized land lizard native to Australia. She loves basking in the warmth of her environment and is most active when she sees me approach the enclosure knowing that her favorite Dubias are about to join her! Ackie Monitors are found in an arid environment. Their preferred habitat is sandy soil and lots of rocks. .Ackie Monitors can be handled but are more skittish than other types of lizards. Ackies require a great deal of patience for taming and holding. Should you determine (after careful consideration) that an Ackie is the right choice for a pet, you may want to introduce yourself to your Ackie through placing your hand in the enclosure and letting the lizard come to you. it will take time.
Ackie Monitors reach an average length of 24 – 28 inches with males usually being the larger. They can live an average life span of 15 to 20 years with proper care and feeding and an adequate enclosure.
